TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

Teaching others the vocal art of music brings great joy and satisfaction to my heart! I love to learn and grow in every area of life through the appliance of discipline, discovery, and creativity. Therefore, in my studio these elements of the voice will be emphasized not only for the benefit of the voice, but for the benefit of the overall wellbeing of the student.

The application of discipline will help the student learn self-control, responsibility, and determination. We often must move forward regardless of the uncontrollable obstacles that we come across in life. To teach discipline in regards to music, I formulate a personalized practice schedule for the student and require a practice log due at the beginning of each lesson. We focus on a breakdown of warm-ups, technique, scales, and application of specific pieces. This helps us both understand where weaknesses and strengths lie, as we compare both time and output throughout our time working together.

To learn is to discover. In my own private study of the voice, my curiosity is constantly pushing me to discover deeper and more specific things related to the art that I love. I hope to encourage the student to do the same and discover things that otherwise they would not have known. We spend time discussing composers, musical styles, and interesting works. These discussions will stem from homework related to research and reading. I will not limit the student in what they can choose to research, even in regards to their specific instrument. This will be a supplemental advantage to both the student and I, as we seek to know more about the art that we love. In life, this skill is valuable for health (see 2005 report of a 2 year study in Health Psychology), intelligence, and social relationships.

Our imaginations are the first step towards innovation. They are the link to all the blue prints for every technological, industrial, and sociological advancement that mankind has ever made. They are the cornerstone to creation, the building block of dreams, and the driving force behind every composer’s beautiful piece of music. I hope to stretch the imagination of the student and encourage an environment of creativity. We explore through the additives of style upon preexisting pieces, the communication of the text through acting and stage presence, and compositional exploration.

Most importantly, I hope to encourage a deeper appreciation and love of music with those that I teach. I do not seek perfection in my students, but rather, growth and discovery. As you can see, music infiltrates every area of our lives with a value that is immeasurable.
